NIKHEDONIA

In the world of sports in America there is a strenuous game called football
It is rough and demanding and filled with tackles and blocks and many a fall
Each team is competing to prove who is best and are always up for the test
And throughout the year the culmination of success ends with a final contest

The winners of the NFC and the AFC go on to play in a super Bowl game
But only one team can win and go on to everlasting and recorded fame
And everyone involved from coaches and players to managers and staff
Participate in the feeling of nikhedonia in the final minutes of the final half

For the Baltimore Ravens, Trent Dilfer in the year 2000 felt it early in his bones
As did Matt Stover kicker extraordinaire and Ray Lewis in many end zones
Coming from a wild card pick the Ravens played a game of strong defense
And had an overwhelming lead so at the end there was little suspense.

But the 2012 run was a game of a very different sort
The first half of the game saw the 49er’s coming up short
But then a power outage in the second half changed the momentum
And the score got tight but the team was able to circumvent them

What a game that was to behold with Joe Flacco filled with empowerment
And Ray Lewis’s second super Bowl ring on the eve of his retirement
And the brothers Harbaugh competing against each other for the highest football honor
There was no doubt about it that particular contest was definitely not a yawner.
